Odds and Ends: CSeries picks up; Air Canada’s Rouge; A380 v 747-8; Allegiant Air

CSeries picks up: Bombardier is ending the year with some upbeat news for the CSeries. First was an LOI for up to 30 CS100s from an unidentified customer. Next the wings arrived to be assembled onto FTV1 (Flight Test Vehicle 1). Then today it converted the MOU for 10+10 CSeries from AirBaltic to a firm order. BBD now has more than 350 orders and commitments for the aircraft. Update: Aviation Week has this item comparing early CSeries orders and E-Jet orders. CSeries stacks up pretty well.

Air Canada’s Rouge: Aspire Aviation has this column on the future of Rouge and the creation of WestJet’s Encore airline, and the impact on Canada’s aviation.

A380 v 747-8: AirInsight has this analysis comparing the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. We discussed portions of this earlier, when the ad wars broke out between Airbus and Boeing, but this is more expansive.

Allegiant Air Acquires A320s: Allegiant Air is on a shopping spree again, this time acquiring nine Airbus A320s from Iberia Airlines.

  1. This is great news for the C-Series.

There is no link to read the A-380 vs. B-747 comparison. I hope it is not a typical apples to oranges comparision as many are.

Allegent is buying 12 year old A-320s. Iberia needs money. Why is this news?

    • Hmm, maybe because Allegiant currently has a 66 strong MD-8* / 757 fleet. ( plus one lone A319 with 18 more to come through 2015 taken up from CeBu and easyJet. ) Now another 9 used A320 shorterm.
Looks like expansion or a significant fleet replacement.

  2. I would like to see a fuel burn comparison between the A380 and 747-8. How much fuel does an A380 burn on a 5000 nm trip, with a payload of 130 Klb?

  3. RE: CSeries picks up

I guess anyone with a bit of aerospace background saw the CSeries’ danger for the shorter Airbus and Boeing NB’s when the basic specs became available. As could be expected A & B dismissed everything and spread doubt about the program everywhere.

2 Years ago Airbus realized doing nothing wasn’t a good strategy. Sofar the A319 didn’t really kill the CS300. Contrary, few A319 NEOs are sold. Boeing lived in a denial for a while & then put their money where their mouth is.

I can see BBD building 10 CSeries a month in the future, with a CS500 being launched when the CS300 is flown.. If the Chinese want, they can lift the program http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/4666627/

    • keesje, Merry Christmas to you and your family, too. Merry Christmas to all here on this blog.

I wish everyone a happy new year and good health for 2013, and many more years to come.

Today is 21 December 2012 and it looks like we are all still here. I guess the Myans need to start a new ‘long count calender’ today as the old one is ending.

  4. As I understood it, the Mayans only implied the end of an era, not that the world would end… (which of course is one possible end of an era, but hardly the only one).

    That said: Good Yule!
