Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, my family would occasionally trek down to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry at Christmas time. The main attraction then was not all the very cool stuff in the Museum, including the German submarine U-505, a full-size replica of a coal mine, and locomotives.
At this time of year, it was to see the Christmas Around The World display–a tradition that is now 80 years old. Even as a child, it was amazing to see how different cultures celebrated Christmas. Here’s a taste.
LNA has some prepared posts between Christmas and New Year. Otherwise, we are taking the holidays off and return Jan. 2, 2023–unless there is compelling breaking news.
So with disdain for political correctness, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Thanks Scott,
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas too…and a Happy New Year. And thanks for helping us understand this stuff over all these years…much appreciated Sir. You and your team would get a Pulitzer too if the world had a brain cell.
Best wishes, Bill & Co.
Merry Christmas and happy new year to all LNA contributors and fellow readers!
When I was a youngster, 7 maybe, my folks made the semi annual trek to Wisconsin (wink and a not with the FAA that paid half the trip to your hiring point, my dad was hired in Anchorage but his hiring point was listed as Milwaukee as that was where the main family was, the best the FAA could do for its remote employees (some on Wake Island as well)
We got down to Chicago and toured the Science and Industry museum which was fantastic at the time as well as U-505. The coal mine was actually UNDER the building. Great stuff for a kid whose world evolved around tech.
Years latter I was visiting family in Wisconsin and we got invited down to Chicago by a friend of my friend. I went through the Science and Industry again, it had fallen on hard times and was sadly beat up. The Mine was closed of course. U-505 was ok but rusting.
I understand its all being resurrected. U-505 was being housed and restored. Hope so, it was really fantastic.
As for Politically Correct, Happy Holidays works as well and to each their own. I am good with either, hoping for a better world in the coming years and that is what counts.
Merry Christmas to everyone.
Thanks to Leeham News for all the stories over the years. Even though I can’t afford the subscription stories, I do enjoy the comments and all that knowledge within.
Happy new year to one and all for 2023.
