The NMA for North American carriers

After having checked how an NMA would serve the trans-Atlantic, Asian-Pacific and Middle East markets, we now place the aircraft at hubs in North America. Important destinations will be all the US States including Alaska and Hawaii but also Canada, Central America and as much of South America as possible. In some cases, West Europa and Africa are covered as well.

The North American continent is large. We will, therefore, base the aircraft at several hubs to see how the two NMAs fare. The typical hubs will be Chicago (ORD), New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX) and Miami (MIA).

Operating from Chicago

Figure 1 shows how an operation from Chicago would work fine for covering North American destinations including Hawaii and Alaska.

Central and South America would be on the coverage limit for the smaller NMA for Santiago, Chile (SCL) and Sao Paolo, Brazil (GRU). The larger NMA would only cover the northern states in South America from Chicago. West Europe would have a good coverage.

Operating from New York

Figure 2 shows how an operation from New York would work fine for covering North American destinations and Alaska. Hawaii is now out of reach for the larger NMA and on the range limit for the smaller.

Central and South America would be covered down to Santiago, Chile (SCL) and Sao Paolo, Brazil (GRU) for the smaller NMA but not the larger. West Europe and West Africa would be covered by both NMA.

Operating from Los Angeles

Figure 3 shows how an operation from Los Angeles covers North America including Alaska and Hawaii.

Central America is covered but South America is only covered down to Caracas, Venezuela and Bogota, Columbia.

Operating from Miami

Finally, Figure 4 shows how an operation from Miami covers South America down to Santiago and Sao Paolo. But now Hawaii and part of Alaska is a problem for the larger NMA.

Nothing of Europe other than Ireland is covered for the larger NMA. The smaller covers part of western Europe and Africa.

Summary

The NMA will be useful aircraft for North American carriers, primarily for US and Canadian Domestic operations. The Chicago position gives a good idea of Coverage from Canada bases like Toronto.

South America and western Europe are partly covered dependent on home base, with Miami being the best base for South American destinations. This wraps up the coverage part of the article series.
